Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke to US President Joe Biden on the phone on Friday. Biden congratulated him on taking office, as the spokesman for the federal government, Steffen Hebestreit, announced in the evening. They have confirmed the close ties between Germany and the USA and the will to further strengthen and deepen them. They agreed that the transatlantic friendship was essential for overcoming current and future challenges.

From the White House it was said that Biden had emphasized his support for a “robust relationship” with Germany and a further strengthening of transatlantic cooperation in the conversation. The White House said they spoke about global challenges such as climate change and the fight against the pandemic as well as Russia’s troop deployment on the border with Ukraine.
